For Diploma Engineer who have completed their diploma in either Mechanical, Marine, Electrical or Electrical and Electronics Streams, Institute of Maritime Studies Goa provides training to be a Marine Engineer Officer. After completion of this course a DME student joins ship as Trainee Engineer. A Diploma Engineer becomes at par with a Degree Engineer in the Maritime Field. Career Scope
On completion of training both graduate and diploma entry candidates are permitted to join ships immediately. After completion of 6 months sea experience they can obtain MEO Class IV Part A from MMD Govt. of India. Graduate candidates are exempted from appearing in this exam while diploma entry candidates have to appear in this exam.
All of them can then appear for MEO Class IV Part B.
Trainee Engineer rises to become a Chief Engineer normally in 7 to 8 years, subject to passing further examinations conducted by Mercantile Marine Department, Government of India.
Salaries
The Salaries of Junior Engineer vary from company to company. However, approximate starting salary is ₹25000/- per month for Indian companies and US $500-1100 in foreign companies. A chief Engineer draws a salary of over ₹700000/- per month.
Admission through Online Entrance Examination, followed by Interviews, Psychometric Test and Medical Test. An amount of Rs.3750/-(non-refundable) for GME and DME candidates is to be paid by the candidate towards online/entrance exam and Psychometric test fee.

Syllabus
The marine engineering course for diploma engineers is of two year duration during which they undergo one year classroom study, 6 months of workshop and 6 months of marine afloat training.
Classroom Training
In classroom training the students are taught advanced Marine Engineering subjects. The syllabus for these subjects is developed by the Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India. The names of subjects are:
- English: Use of grammar, letter composing, reference to context etc.
- Applied Mechanics: Study of basic mechanical principles involved in operations of various mechanical devices.
- Thermodynamics and Heat Engine: Study of refrigeration cycle, air-conditioning, heat transfer etc.
- Mathematics: Study of calculus, algebra, statics etc.
- Engineering Knowledge Motor: This subject includes the construction and composition of parts of main propulsion machinery which is a slow speed large marine diesel engine. The subject also covers medium speed generator engines.
- Engineering Knowledge General: This subject covers all the auxiliary support machinery located in the engine room for the operation of the main propulsion engine. These machineries are air compressors, refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, purifiers, pumps pipelines and valves, heat exchangers etc. This subject also covers all the machineries fitted on the deck of ship like anchor windlass, mooring winch, hatch cover opening and closing arrangements, decks cranes etc.
- Marine Engineering Practices: This subject covers the operation and maintenance procedures of all the machines on board a ship.
- Ship Safety and Environmental Protection: This subject teaches about all the mandatory rules and regulations required to be followed in a ship. Some of the important rules taught are Safety at Life at Sea, Marine Pollution, international Ships and Ports Security Code etc.
- Naval Architecture and Ship Construction: This subject teaches about the construction details of a ship and mathematical principles involved in Naval Architecture.
- Electro-Technology: This subject teaches about all the basic principles of electricity, electronics, automation etc. Construction and operation of electrical and electronic equipment required on-board a ship is also covered.
- Management: Basic principles managing a ship, team work between different departments etc. are covered in this subject.
- Marine Engineering Drawing: This subject teaches interpretation of Marine Equipment drawing, isometric view, dismantled view of machine parts etc.
Workshop Training
During the workshop training candidates are taught to complete a number of practical assignments in the various shops like:
- Fitting Shop: Here the use of hand tools taught for carrying at fitting shop.
- Machine Shop: Here the use of lathe machine is taught.
- Welding shop: Here assignments involve the usage of electric arc welding as well as oxy-acetylene gas welding, brazing etc.
Affloat Training
During afloat training the candidates are sent on board various training ships, ships in port, electrical workshop, shipyards and IMS marine laboratory. Here the candidates are given a feel of ships machineries and taught about the safety of work at sea and dismantling and assembling of machine parts.
