1. Details of course:

  1. Diploma Entry Course: 2 Years
  2. Degree Entry Course: 1 year

1st December every year.

  1. Diploma Entry Course: Rs. 7,49,200/-(Non-Refundable) + Rs. 15,000/- Caution money (refundable at the end of the course). Payable in two yearly installments.
  2. Degree Entry Course: Rs. 5,99,600/-(Non-Refundable) + Rs. 15,000/- Caution money (refundable at the end of the course). Payable on ADMISSION
  • Inclusive of course fee, boarding & lodging, uniforms, uniform shoes, helmets, boiler suits, safety shoes, library, laboratory charges, group accidental insurance, training and assessment record book, training manual, auxiliary courses, stationery,  INDos registration, IME (I) student Membership etc. Also includes 1% levy to Director General of Shipping, GOVT. of India.
  • Auxiliary Courses – see details in SL No.7 PST, EFA, PSSR, FPFF,  & STSDSD.

2. Important Information:

1. Please do not apply, if you do not satisfy above eligibility criteria.
2. You must be in possession of a passport. You need to apply for a passport if you do not have it. It is a requirement before admission letter can be issued.
3. All correspondence at selection stage will be done on e-mail.
4. All applicants must have a correct e-mail id and mention the same in the application form.
5. Candidates are advised to check their eyesight to ensure it meets Indian Merchant Navy requirements as specified above.
6. All expenses incurred by way of travelling, boarding, lodging etc. for the purpose of this selection, will have to be borne by the candidate.

7. Any candidate found using unfair means or having made false representations will be disqualified.
8. It has been brought to our notice that some agents / persons are charging a fee from the prospective candidates to facilitate selection at IMS, Goa. Please be advised that we have NO such agreement with any agents nor any individual or Company, for the purpose of selection of candidates.
9. Medical standards in the Indian merchant navy are very strict. Furthermore, the nature of work involved demands a tough constitution and sailing on merchant ships for up to 10 months at a time. If the candidates have any doubts about meeting these requirements, they are advised to reconsider their decision to join this Merchant Navy course.

3. Insurance And Indemnity:

a. In view of the training being given in Industrial workshops, Shipyards and Training Vessels the Institute provides an accident Insurance policy for all. The Institute also arranges Mediclaim Policy for each Cadet at his expense, for a value of Rs.50,000/- for the period of training. However, it is advisable that the cadets take their own life insurance policies.
b. Group Accident Insurance Cover – Sum assured 2,00,000 per head is also arranged in addition to the Mediclaim Policy for all the students.
c. Notwithstanding the above provisions, the Cadet and his/her parent/guardian shall sign a declaration indemnifying the INSTITUTE against any claim arising during the tenure of training.

4. Hostel:

a. Hostel facilities for cadets include:
     – Decent rooms for studying and sleeping.
     – Cadets Mess for all meals (No meals are allowed to be taken in rooms).
     – Recreation rooms for playing indoor games, gymnasium, viewing T.V. and Internet station.
     – Wi-Fi Facility
     – Grounds / playing fields for outdoor games.
b. Hostel Warden is in-charge of the hostel and is available round the clock.
c. Liberty to go out is given only on Saturday evenings and Sundays. Night offs are permitted only once a month. Parents/Cadets are advised not to request for night offs or additional liberty for any reason.

5. Issue Of CDC:

As per the latest DGS requirement, a candidate has to directly apply for CDC online after completion of basic STCW courses including Security Training.

6. Candidate Registration after Admission offer and Issue of INDos No.:

Selected candidates after Interview and Medical Examination will be issued an Admission Letter which will require the candidate to register online with the DG Shipping website. Detailed Instructions shall be included in the Admission Letter. The Candidate shall receive a Reference No. from the DG Shipping Website which has to be communicated to the Institute along with Scanned copies of his Passport, Class Xth Certificate and Photograph. The INSTITUTE has to obtain INDos No. (Indian National Database of Seafarers) for all Cadets on joining training INSTITUTE. The fee of Rs.1200/-  + GST charged for this registration is included in the fees.

7. Auxiliary Courses:

(a) Satisfactory completion of courses in Fire Fighting, First Aid, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, is the requirement of the STCW 2010 Convention, and hence is made compulsory by Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India. These courses are not conducted in the INSTITUTE but by other maritime training academy. However, the INSTITUTE will arrange for these merchant navy courses for its Cadets, at an appropriate merchant naval maritime academy. The fee for these courses included in the fees.
These courses are of two weeks duration and form a part of the training program being conducted by the INSTITUTE. No refund of fee, partly or fully, shall be made, if the cadet has already done these courses, elsewhere, before joining the INSTITUTE.

(b) The Institute conducts following courses during the training program for the enrolled Pre Sea Cadets :

Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties – This is a mandatory course for obtaining CDC.

8. Placements:

IMS Goa students are placed in a large number of shipping companies. MOST OF THE CANDIDATES FIND PLACEMENT AT THE TIME OF ADMISSION ITSELF. REST OF THE CANDIDATES GET PLACED DURING OR AFTER COURSE COMPLETION. 

Note: The Institute does not charge any fees for placement of candidates.

9. Selection Procedure:

a. On receipt of online applications, payment of Rs. 3750/-( non-refundable) and soft copy of passport size colour photograph in JPEG format (maximum 120×160 pixels) and file size less than 20 KB uploaded on the application form, the eligible candidate will be sent an Admit card by email only.
b. Candidate should take a colour print out of the Admit card and bring to the examination hall. They should follow all Instructions on the Admit card.
c. The details of the test centre will be mentioned in the Admit card.
d. The list of Candidates shortlisted for interview, along with an interview schedule will be displayed on www.imsgoa.org. The interviews will be held at the Institute at Goa or online, on the dates mentioned in the Admission Schedule. (Note: No separate notification shall be sent to candidates)
e. Names of the candidates selected in the interviews and also those placed in waitlist will be informed at the Institute.
f. All candidates selected for Interview must bring with them an Admission fee of Rs. 7000/- and Rs. 4000/-cash for Medical fee (i.e. RS.11,000/-), in anticipation of being selected. These payments can also be made by credit/debit cards at the Institute / online at IMS Portal.
g. The selected and waitlisted candidates will have to deposit payments before verification of certificates.
h. The Admission fee of Rs. 7,000/- will be returned to waitlist Candidate not called for selection and/or fails in Medicals. The medical fee of Rs.4,500/- will not be refunded after undergoing a medical test.
i. Candidates who are awaiting final semester results may also apply.
j. One set of self-attested photocopies of following Certificates is to be brought by the candidate at the time of certificate verification/ during the interview along with the originals.

  1. Passing Certificates of Std. X and XII, showing date of birth.
  2. Marksheet of X, XII, Diploma, Degree showing 50% or more marks in English.
  3. Provisional / Degree / Diploma Certificate issued by the University / Technical Board (Certificate issued by College is acceptable if all marksheets are issued by the board)
  4. Marksheets of all semesters of Degree /Diploma.
  5. Bonafide student and AICTE/UGC approval Certificate in the format available at the end of these instructions. To be printed on College/ Polytechnic letterhead and signed by Principal/Registrar.
  6. Certificates for any additional courses done, extracurricular
    activities like NSS / NCC/ Scouts etc.
  7. Candidates who have appeared for the qualifying examination and awaiting results should attach a certificate from the appropriate authority to that effect.
  8. Proof of Work Experience, if any. It is the candidate´s responsibility to ensure his eligibility as per details given above, and also fill in the true and correct information in the application form.5

Engineering Knowledge: Basic General Engineering Knowledge, Electricity, Heat Engines, Mechanics & Theory of Machines, Hydraulics, Electronics, Strength of Materials, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning.

III.NOTE:

a. Above merchant navy course fees include 1% levy to Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.
b. A candidate desirous of obtaining educational loan from Bank may approach Bank of India or State Bank of India.
c. If a candidate after joining this training course withdraws on his own from the training or is expelled on the disciplinary ground, shall not be eligible for any refund of fees.
d. Penalty @ Rs.150/- per day for late payment of fee will be charged as per the rules laid down by the INSTITUTE. Late payment with penalty is limited to a period of 15 days. After expiry of 15 days, a heavier penalty may be imposed or the candidate may be expelled from training as per discretion of the Director.
e. In unavoidable circumstances, the fee may be revised during training, and the difference will be payable at that time.

12. Additional Weightage for Final Selection:

i. Passed X or XII or Diploma or Degree from Goa Board/ Technical Board /Goa University.
ii. Percentage of marks in XII / Diploma and Degree more than 60%
iii. Work Experience from 3 months onwards.
iv. For Diploma candidates completed XII science and/or having Diploma
in Shipbuilding Engineering.
vi. NCC/Scout.

3. All the aspiring candidates are suggested to get themselves tested for COLOUR BLINDNESS. Candidates with Colour Blindness will not be eligible for admission.
