Guiding Principles for Excellence and Integrity at Institute of Maritime Studies Goa
All the cadets undergoing Pre Sea Training at the Institute are expected to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity and professionalism- both within the campus and beyond. The Code of Conduct is designed to foster a safe, respectful and productive learning environment for all members of the Institute.
Cadets must adhere strictly to the rules and guidelines laid down by the Institute and conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on their personal character, the reputation of the Institute and the standards of the maritime profession.
Specific conduct and disciplinary instructions are issued to all cadets at the time of admission. Key provisions are outlined below:
Smoking, consumption of alcohol, or use of any narcotic substances is strictly prohibited on campus, in the hostel, and at all training locations, including afloat training centers.
The Hostel Warden is authorized to carry out random alcohol testing on cadets returning from city leave or night out. Where necessary, cadets may be referred for formal medical testing to confirm substance use.
Loss or damage to Institute property- including that of the workshop, ship, classrooms, and hostel- will be viewed seriously. This includes tampering with fixtures, fittings, instruments, furniture, books, periodicals, walls, windowpanes, vehicles, or any other institutional assets. Offending cadets may face immediate disciplinary action, including expulsion and/or recovery of damages from their caution deposit.
The Institute follows a strict Zero Tolerance Policy on Ragging. In line with national directives, any act of ragging will be reported to the local police and the Institute will fully cooperate with ensuing investigations and prosecutions.
All cadets are strictly warned against participating in or encouraging any form of ragging. They are also expected to actively discourage and report such behaviour if witnessed. Complaints of ragging, physical assault, or use of abusive language will be dealt with severely and may lead to suspension, rustication, or expulsion from the training programme.
An Anti-Ragging Committee and an Anti-Ragging Squad have been constituted by the institute to monitor, prevent and act upon any reported incidents at the Institute.
Cadets can report incidents of ragging through the following helplines:
Harassment or discrimination based on race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, national origin, or any other protected characteristic is strictly prohibited. The Institute is committed to maintaining a learning environment that is free from such misconduct.
To address such concerns, a Grievance Committee has been constituted by the Institute to receive, investigate, and resolve complaints and disputes raised by cadets. Contact details of the Committee members are prominently displayed across the campus.
Cadets are strongly encouraged to report any incidents of harassment or discrimination to the Grievance Committee. All reports will be handled with appropriate confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws. Cadets reporting incidents in good faith will be protected from any form of retaliation.
The Institute has adopted a PoSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Policy to ensure a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all. A dedicated Internal Committee is responsible for addressing and resolving complaints of sexual harassment.
Cadets or staff facing such issues may contact designated helpline numbers, which are displayed prominently across the campus.
